Taking time to date your partner is so important. Actually having the time to date your partner when you have three small kids is a different story. Since we went from a family of three to a family of five there has been less and less time to spend outside the home as a couple. It is a lot to ask someone watch all three kidlettes while we go out for the night. Since we don’t want to wait for the rare occasion when we can make this happen, we have become really good at enjoying date nights from the comfort of home. Once the kids are all tucked into bed for the night, mom and dad get to unwind and relax a bit. So, with Valentines Day just around the corner, I thought I would share three of my favourite ways to spend a night in.
1. Pub night at home. Go fill up a couple of growlers from your local brewery. I like getting a couple of options to try. We usually get a favourite we’ve had before plus something new, when they have it. Then we treat ourselves to classic pub foods like chicken wings, nachos, home made fries, and whatever else we decide to whip up. We try to make out at home option a little healthier, so that’s a win too!
2. Cook dinner together. Now the first step to cooking together, is opening up a good bottle of wine. I’m pretty sure wine makes us better chefs. Or to change it up a bit, try making a fun new cocktail for the night. This cocktail was so simple and very delicious. It is just a sparkling peach juice with a splash of vodka. A little flower from the garden and a heart straw make it pretty…and I’m a sucker for pretty.
3. Dinner and a movie. If cooking another meal just sounds like a daunting task, order in some “fancy” takeout! We like to use the food delivery services like Door Dash and order in something delicious. We set the coffee table, put on a flick, and enjoy watching something other then Sesame Street or Paw Patrol. Clean up is a breeze, so there is more time to relax. One of my favourite things to do in the Winter months is to light a fire in our wood burning fire place. It makes the night just that much cozier.
So this Valentines Day, try not to get hung up on the where? and the how?. Try planning your own date night in, and don’t miss out on a single thing.
